NYZ displayed unusual activity this
morning at 1718 utc
It remained on the air for an additional 2 minutes
from its normal broadcast of duration of 3 minutes.
For those whom are not familiar with this station
it transmits on both 4860 khz and 6840 khz each hour
starting at 18 minutes past. On rare occasions
it will begin its 3 minute long broadcast earlier
or later than 18 past the hour, and even the
radio operator there will use a hand key on the
rarest of occasions.

I'm attempting to comprehend the significance of
these events today. Both OTUV & NYZ entities.
At present, a deep satisfaction of having my mind
immersed into the rf spectrum.

A pollution of a different sort
is a blight upon the rf spectrum
The specific emission Im giving as
an example was recorded recently
while tuning through the hf spectrum.
Sporadic in nature, turning on
at the most unusual times. It blankets
the hf, vhf and low uhf frequencies
here in south central Alaska.

UGU8 is believed to be the

ringleader of this bunch of goose stepping

individuals using 3785 khz

Only god knows what insane actions they

commit themselves to between scheduled

This blogging thing is totally new to me
I'm starting to get the hang of it. More of the icons

Has been of some interest among the radio communities
over the years. We have the Yaesu receiver here tuned
to 13562 khz, the external speaker is piped into the
buildings public address system. Its blasting throughout
the workplace, I think its totally cool to have
a signal completely reverberating an entire structure.

A unique unidentified signal is spanning
the globe. This signal was first detected recently
by a shortwave listener located in Northern Germany.
Speculation is arising on various internet discussion
groups over the possible source of the signal.

I've never encountered any rtty transmission
like this one

Every 5 seconds this station transmits a unstable
marker, with a peculiar chirp. I first noticed this
signal three weeks ago while doing my morning
3 mhz bandscan. Since then this signal has drifted
down 500 hz.

Today at 1732 utc this " marker signal " went into
a series of rtty like data transmissions for about
5 seconds each. Resuming its chirpy marker in between.
These rtty bursts lasted only until 1733 utc, for
one minute only.

Earlier, I've simply written this " marker signal "
as nothing more than a fishing buoy often used by
long range fishing vessels plying the pacific.

Now that this unique emission is starting to reveal
itself unto shortwave listeners, interest is beginning
to grow.

By 20:00 utc it will fade into the noise floor as
atmospheric conditions shift here in the pacific
northwest.

I had to leave work today

with all the potential of hf communications occurring

and not being able to listen, I was simply unable to remain at

my workplace.

With this intense storm cell covering the north pacific

and bearing down on both western Alaska & eastern Russia

many communications resources will come alive today.

Upon arrival at home, 4125 khz was buzz with the maritime

traffic for the remote and isolated villages along our coastline.

They are cut off due to the high winds which are preventing

any aircraft to land there. These coastal communities are at

sea level and right on the coast (google satellite images available)

the storm surge will flood these areas. They have

no where to seek shelter else where . . .

On the local ham radio frequencies

mention was made of the Air National Guard

flying C130's and a C17 overflight.

I've never heard them so active.
Stations are popping out of the woodwork, some are
sending in a chaotic manner. No compliance to this
cw nets communications protocols.

I'm stunned

Sitting in utter amazement at the sheer numbers
of swl's, ham radio operators, scanning enthusisats
that are exploring the rf spectrum for unusual
radio emissions.
Today's discussions on the internet bulletin boards
about uhf data transmission formats. Litteraly
boiled over with individuals swarming about this
topic. We continue on as this is being typed even
via skype on facebook.
Its a general concensus that many of these uhf
data transmissions are using proprietary modulation
formats unique to each companys products. Most have
no govermental licensing in place for their emissions.
Whatever data is being sent is solely up to the
end consumers desires.

Privacy instantly obtained

If no communication modulation industry standard
exsists for these type of products then what level
of encryption is needed ?

With the migration from uhf voice communications
towards celluar telephones. Empty uhf spectrum
beckons new technologies & users.

For example, an individual located in Guangdong, China
uploaded these images of their interest in the 2 ghz
region.

I can only imagine the exotic

communications

these yagi antennas are being exposed to !

A review of our own
efforts is in order

Clearly some emissions are occuring within these urban
areas that are totally unique in every regard.

Exciting times we live in !

I'm currently sweeping through the 400 to 455 mhz
range with a receiver set in AM mode. Small frequency
steps so it smoothly sweeps through the selected
spectrum with an open squelch. Why in am mode ?
Try it for yourself ! Many of these data transmissions
are passed by completely undetected using fm.

on 7607 khz. Its very possible that GNXG has
just activated this frequency. I'm surprised that
no mention of 7607 khz is not mentioned in the

Its rough sounding carrier grinding away at the

Clandestine communications

XSG Shanghai Radio

Unusual activity for a maritime shore station has been
observed by several shortwave listeners along the pacific
rim. Discussions continue on various internet groups about
the purpose of these "alternate" communication agendas for
a maritime entity.

Our primary observations occur on 12856 khz with current
atmospheric conditions excellent signal strengths have
been noted.

Chinese vessel HAIGANG36 callsign: BTKT is receiving
unique numerical messages at regular intervals from XSG.
Formatted in a manner which is inconsistent with normal
maritime messages. Suggesting Haigang 36 is participating
in some form of clandestine activities.

After consulting with other local shortwave listeners, historical
online data for vessel Haingang 36 made available through the
AIS system is given here for your own research.

This week was a hectic one

I find it to be a disgusting situation where one

cannot pursue lifes ambitions.

My radio receivers anxiously await for me

to return.

Regardless, progress

has been made

An unstable anomaly is occurring nearby within the

mid 452 mhz band. I detected it Friday evening

while slowly tuning manually about this area

with the Icom 8500 set in ssb mode.

I feel this splinter of a rf emission is an unstable

one, possibly spurious in nature from a nearby

fm commercial transmitter.

Appearing in a random manner moving about

aimlessly in frequency within this region

of the rf spectrum.

At 58 minutes past each hour

it interrupts its digital bursts every 6 seconds

with a morse ident.

A comprehensive search of two areas

of the uhf spectrum is underway.

400 - 430 mhz and 450 - 460 mhz

for uhf data transmissions.

After the recent discussion about the uhf data

network which is active on 410.950 mhz

leads to the question of what other digital communication

networks are active in our area.

This 410.950 mhz system is extremely active

with numerous data transmitters spread over Anchorage.

Several of us have attempted to reveal the

licensed company or individual whom this

network belongs to.

No such information is available.

I find it interesting that if my receiver is set to

FM mode as I'm searching many of these data transmissions

appear as only silent intermittent unmodulated carriers.

A much more productive signal detection occurs when

I use the IC-R8500 set in ssb (unsquelched) while

sweeping through the desired uhf spectrum.

Using the frequency step of 10hz gives a useful

tuning rate for the receiver to sweep through

in a unattended manner.

Manually stopping the frequency sweep on any item

of interest by depressing the prog button once. If

the vfo knob is turned only results in a reversal of

frequency sweep.

Consulting the Icom R8500 owners manual on

page 24 explains the settings for conducting such a frequency

After several hours of searching today within these two

uhf frequency segments 400-430 and 450-560 mhz has

revealed a number of interesting rf sources.

I'm finding that

having the ability to canvas a frequency segement

in ssb mode with unsquelched audio is a valuable tool.

R8500 hard at work sweeping through uhf

unattended

Theres something special about hearing some of these data transmission

bursts in ssb that has a unique appeal.

I havent had the time today for a detailed analysis using

several software audio programs but further

monitoring is in order.

Some of the formats that are being used in this region

are interesting. It would be exciting to search the uhf spectrum

from other locations.

been active today yelling at each other on

Its overwhelming the anger that they are inflicting upon

each other.

Tuning across this rf entity

yesterday evening made for an exciting monitoring session.

10988 khz activity was first noticed here in the pacific northwest

back in August of 2006.

We are going over our notes and logs it appears in that time

frame this station was only active for a brief period.

Only to emerge again in June of 2010.

Several shortwave listeners reported this stations activity

only to disappear by August of 2010.

His signal strength peaks during the evenings here in the

pacific northwest from 02 to 06 utc. Often quite a

robust signal.

Greg Cobalt commented earlier today that he first noticed this

HSW Bangkok, Thailand is active on 8743 khz
at the moment with excellent signal strength.

Tuned across its unusual musical interval
transmission HSW uses between each ssb weather
broadcast. A male voice gave some type of
detailed report and the female gave the
marine weather broadcast.

fortunate to hear this stations signals

Signals from northwestern Russia
are being received by numerous shortwave listeners on

These stations are using surplus military communications
equipment judging from the poor audio quality.
Most of them are using AM a few ventured with
cw. This offhand communication network has
no structure or organizational control.
Its this " fringe " concept that adds so much
enjoyment from receiving such signals.

Yet another unique shortwave listening experience

has been active for the past few days on

8353 khz

Working cw with several other stations around

0800 utc. I find it interesting that these

vessels are still using hand keyed cw to pass

lengthy messages of great detail among each other.

Miyamaru # 11 certainly has a experienced

cw operator on board

Detected this activity on 8353 khz during a

evening bandscan of 8mhz.

I cant resist making a overview of rf emissions

within a selected spectrum when atmospheric conditions

are optimum. It never ends. A new

avenue of action for my receivers

allways appears.

As I'm typing this its hard to believe I'm actually
monitoring a frequency within a amateur radio band.
If you do not hear it at first, just wait awhile.

There are soo many different data transmission formats
taking place within this segment, its utterly amazing.
None of them are being emitted from licensed ham operators.

Data control links have completely taken over this
region. Myself I like to tune for such emissions using
my receiver set to AM wide modulation. By the way is
a Icom R8500, but if your limited to fm. Attempt to
monitor using fm wide setting on your fm receiver and
tune to 433.9 mhz This will put you about at the apex
of these data transmissions.

Over the past ten years or so the level of non amateur
radio transmissions in this rf region has steadily increased.

Has amateur radio bands become a patsy for data control
links?

Since June the numbers ssb broadcast by the female
Asian hasnt been copied on 5280 khz. I feel a sense
of loss. Emptiness when I tune through that region.
If only we could hear the Cherry Ripe transmissions
again. With their relocation to Australia reception
becomes difficult if not impossible given current
atmospheric conditions to Alaska. The people on
Guam island must feel the absence as well, they
were truly blessed to have Cherry Ripe radio
broadcasts to occur from their island for so many years.

I feel that the IARU should expand their objectives
beyond the amateur radio spectrum. Viewing the world
from such narrow slits of rf spectrum is such a
limitation. Narrow minded perhaps ?

limited to narrow slivers of the rf spectrum by
the boundaries imposed by the IARU and fellow radio

Signal levels were noticeably down in the
4 & 5 mhz bands this morning. At 15 utc
its nice to begin the day with a band scan
of the lower hf. Wound up in the 7 & 8 mhz
bands during this monitoring session.

Several people at work are still carrying on
about Thursdays exposure to the 8495 khz
Magadan beacon. My clandestine audio broadcast
thoughout our office building 18 floors will
occur again in the near future. Numerous locations
are available for me to tap in the receivers audio
to the public address system. Thursdays atmospheric
conditions were such that the MX beacons on
8495khz were a ideal choice. For curious minds

Today I couldnt resist an urge I've possessed for a
long time. Everyone in my workplace was exposed to
this rf entity occurring on 8495 khz. Its rough buzz
cw note reverberated throughout the building.

To witness the wide range of emotional responses
from everyone being exposed to the rf spectrum was
exciting.

I turned up the volume on the public address system
and pumped 8495 khz audio into their minds.

From the most simple portable swl receiver

delight. This Japanese naval station was noted active
on 6474 khz at 17:30 utc with many messages.
JJF has also been monitored using 12947 khz

Geir Stokkeland monitoring from Vestnes, Norway
has noted that Magadan is active on 8837 khz at 1140 utc
today ! Asiana 221 flight enroute to Seoul was in comms
with Magadan Radio. Exceptional bit of over the pole

First reported in late 2009 by IRC channel #wunclub participants Token, Jon-FL and TheWeb.

Frequencies: 6081, 7431, 7481, 9531, 9581, 9631, 9831, 9881, 10031, 11631, 11681, 11831, 11881, 11981, 12031, 13881 and 15381 kHz (often multiple channels are active at the same time)

This odd narrow band pulsed signal jumps around a center frequency in 100Hz or 200Hz steps, and will also vary the pulse repetition frequency. Pulse rates of 11, 22, 33, 43, 55 and 76ms have been reported. Signals are frequently jammed or overlaid with another wider bandwidth interfering signal.

The pulser may also slowly drift in time but keeping the same frequency and pulse rate.
